Southern Exposure Juried Online Screening 2020

Southern Exposure invites Bay Area BIPOC artists to submit new moving image work for the 2020 Juried Online Screening.
Juried by Dessane Lopez Cassell, an independent curator and writer, chair of the experimental film subcommittee for BlackStar Film Festival, and Editor of Reviews at Hyperallergic.

Who is eligible: Open to Black, Indigenous, and POC artists living in San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Napa, Marin, and Sonoma Counties. Artists may work in collaboration with artists from outside the Bay Area. Work selected for this program will exemplify Southern Exposure’s mission and our commitment to supporting new, innovative, risk-taking contemporary visual art practices.
What work will be considered:
Work that is presented in video form for linear viewing. Original format(s) may be in film, video, or other media. Any genre is acceptable, i.e. experimental, narrative, animation, etc.
Total running time of work must be less than fifteen minutes.
Work must have been completed after January 1, 2019.
Work must be available as a digital downloadable video file via Vimeo, YouTube, Dropbox, or other transfer site or personal web page.
Jurying and Notification: Artists whose work has been accepted to the screening will be notified by email by 7:00PM on Friday, December 4, 2020.
Screening online: December 10, 2020 through January 9, 2021
About the Juror: Dessane Lopez Cassell is a curator, writer, and editor based in New York. Her film curation and writing generally focus on artist’s moving image, documentary, and experimental film practices concerned with race, gender, and representation. Cassell has organized curatorial projects and screenings for the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), MoMA Film, and Flaherty NYC, among others, and her writing has been published in catalogues issued by the Whitney Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and MoMA. Currently, Cassell chairs the experimental film subcommittee for BlackStar Film Festival and serves as Editor of Reviews at Hyperallergic.
